The DJI Goggles were first released in 2017 as a way to enhance the experience of flying DJI drones. They were designed to give pilots a first-person view of their drone’s camera feed, allowing them to fly with greater precision and control. DJI also released the DJI Goggles RE (Racing Edition) in 2017 and were designed for drone racing enthusiasts. They had a number of features specifically tailored to the needs of drone racers, including support for the 5.8 GHz frequency band, which is commonly used in racing drones. The Goggles RE also had a low latency of just 50 ms, making them ideal for racing at high speeds. In addition, they had a built-in receiver that can connect to other racing drones. These goggles are now out of production having been superseded by the DJI FPV Goggles V2, which were released in 2021, and most recently the DJI Goggles 2, which were released in 2022.

These goggles were specifically designed to work with DJI’s FPV drones, the DJI FPV and DJI Avata. DJI FPV Goggles V2 are compatible with both of them, while the DJI Goggles 2 only work with DJI Avata. Compared to the DJI FPV Goggles V2, the DJI Goggles 2 are lighter, support head tracking, have better video transmission quality with a lower latency, and are suitable for glasses wearers. The only drawback to the DJI Goggles 2 is they are significantly more expensive when compared with the DJI FPV Goggles V2. While this might not be an issue for some users, it will be a purchasing factor for others. Why you should use 64GB SD cards

It can often be a challenge to decide what equipment to get or use with your drone, especially if you are just getting into flying drones or are entering new areas of the drone world. This is very much true when it comes to SD cards and how to use them. Some drone pilots swear by using 64GB SD cards across the board, while others prefer a mix of 64GB and higher-capacity cards. Here’s a breakdown of the reasoning behind each approach.

Those who stick to 64GB cards appreciate the maximum interoperability that comes with using the same capacity across all devices. Swapping out the SD cards of the drone and goggles is done every time the battery needs changing. This ensures that the footage captured on your most recent flight is safe for processing. If your drone is downed over water, crashes in an irretrievable location, or a system issue causes the data to be wiped, you will have minimized the footage loss to that which can be stored on a 64GB SD card.

Some pilots prefer to use higher-capacity cards, such as 128GB or 256GB, in their goggles and 64GB cards in their drone. The thinking behind this is that the footage stored in the goggles is less essential than the footage captured by the drone. It is also significantly less likely that the goggles themselves will be lost or damaged in flight, so there is less chance to lose the data captured. So, while you do lose the total interchangeability of your SD cards between drone and goggles, you won’t have to swap out the goggles’ SD card anywhere near as often. This will save you time and get you back in the sky quickly.

Some pilots do use higher-capacity SD cards in their drones. This makes sense for those who do a lot of indoor drone flying or ‘low and slow’ flying in quite controlled environments. The drone will always be retrievable, and the chances of serious impact are significantly reduced, and they never get up to enough speed or a high enough altitude to cause irreparable damage if the drone goes down. You also may want to consider higher capacity cards if you are filming in higher resolutions such as 4k or 8k.

Ultimately, the choice between using 64GB SD cards exclusively or mixing and matching with higher-capacity cards comes down to personal preference and how much risk you’re willing to take. Personally, we stick to 64GB SD cards as we do a lot of flying outdoors and in locations where drone crashes could be significant. Much like extra batteries, extra SD cards are a necessity when flying. You will need to consider that both your drone and the FPV goggles will require an SD card so let’s get into the different schools of thought. Some say it is better to keep your SD card’s capacity at 64GB across the board. This will provide the maximum interoperability, where you can simply change out the SD cards in your drone and goggles every time you change the battery. Others prefer having a 128GB or a 256GB SD card in their googles and some 64GB SD cards for the drone. This is because there is a much lower risk of losing the SD card or the data stored on it in the goggles and the footage isn’t as essential as the actual drone footage. Propeller Guards and Bumpers

Also known as a Prop guard, the Avata comes with one as a factory standard. It provides a layer of protection to the propellers, which are arguably the most vulnerable part of a drone in flight. However, greater levels of protection are available than the factory standard prop guard found on the Avata. FPV Remote Controller

Battery cover (anti-release buckle)

The final accessory that you have to have in your Avata kit is a battery anti-release buckle or cover. We love the Avata but it does have a know issue where the connection between the battery and the drone can come loose in several circumstances. The first is if you crash your drone and the connection comes loose, you won’t be able to relaunch (e.g. turtle mode) and fly home. This might not be such an issue if you’re flying in a park but if you fly your Avata into the side of a cliff, retrieving it might be beyond you.

The second is when you are flying in ‘manual mode’. It is not unknown for the battery to come flying out with faster, more acrobatic flying, with the result being a crash. This would be a disaster if it happened at height or over unfavourable terrain.
